WISCONSIN UNION ADDS NEW EVENTS, ACTIVITIES TO 2020 WINTER CARNIVAL LINEUP

MADISON – The Wisconsin Union’s Winter Carnival will return Feb. 3-9 with new events that encourage University of Wisconsin-Madison students and other community members to get outside and enjoy Wisconsin’s winter season.

One new addition to the Winter Carnival experience is Terrace Wonderland, an evening of winter-themed activities at the Memorial Union Terrace Feb. 6 from 4-7 p.m. This free debut event will include live music, cotton candy, family-friendly games, gingerbread house-making, a hot chocolate bar, Valentine’s Day card-making, an ice skating rink and more.

The annual celebration will also include Carnival community favorites, such as Lady Liberty on Lake Mendota Feb. 6-8. The tradition of placing portions of a Statue of Liberty Styrofoam replica on the lake began with a prank in 1979 by the Pail and Shovel Party, which was led by UW-Madison alumni Leon Varjian and Jim Mallon ’79. The Wisconsin Union team continues that tradition with an inflatable version of the Statue’s head, arm and torch.

The Carnival will include a flurry of additional events throughout the week, including but not limited to the following:

  • Flannel Day, Feb. 3, 4-5 p.m.: A guest wearing a flannel shirt is eligible to receive a small order of deep fried cheese curds from der Rathskeller for $1.
  • Free Snowshoe Rentals, Feb. 4, noon-5 p.m.: Guests can rent snowshoes for free through Outdoor UW at Memorial Union with a valid Wiscard.
  • Virtual Reality Experience, Feb. 4, 3-6 p.m.: Attendees can hike to the top of a mountain or scuba dive without ever leaving the comfort of Mendota Lodge and meet Wisconsin Hoofers leaders.
  • Leave No Trace Workshop, Feb. 5, 6-8 p.m.: New this year, visitors are invited to attend an Outdoor UW-hosted Leave No Trace Workshop focusing on sustainable habits and ethics in the outdoors for $5.
  • Weathering the Winter Blues, Feb. 5, 5-6:30 p.m.: Join the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) Society and Politics Committee along with Jack Nitschke, UW-Madison associate professor of psychology and psychiatry, and Felix Savino, training director and psychologist at University Health Services — Mental Health Services, and discover strategies to stay healthy during Wisconsin winters.
  • Candlelight Ski and Snowshoe Hike, Feb. 6, 5-8 p.m.: Led by the Hoofer Outing Club, participants can snowshoe, cross-country ski or hike along a candlelit path and then enjoy a campfire at Picnic Point.
  • Free Art Friday: Button-Making, Feb. 7, 5-7 p.m.: Attendees can enjoy free button making, hot cocoa and cookies with Wheelhouse Studios.
  • Snow Ball, Feb. 7, 8-11:55 p.m.: Guests can join the Hoofer Sailing Club for a free night of music, dancing, appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages.
  • Broomball Tournament, Feb. 8, 8 a.m.-9 p.m.: University Recreation & Wellbeing will host its annual broomball tournament on Lake Mendota. Registration is available for those with a Rec Well membership.
  • Connolly Classic Pond Hockey Tournament, Feb. 8-9: University of Wisconsin-Madison students can take part in University Recreation & Wellbeing’s pond hockey competition. Registration is available for those with a Rec Well membership.
  • Family Fun in Alumni Park, Feb. 8, noon-3 p.m.: Badgers and Badgers-at-heart of all ages will come together for an afternoon of family-friendly, winter-themed activities in Alumni Park, including art-making and complimentary hot cocoa.
  • Rail Jam, Feb. 8: Witness freestyle skiing and snowboarding up close through Rail Jam, an aerobatic skill and trick competition, which will return to the Memorial Union Terrace for the first time since 2016.

“Everyone looks forward to warm weather activities, but there’s also plenty to do outside during Wisconsin’s winters,” Outdoor UW Director Joseph Webb said. “We invite our community and visitors to learn about and celebrate wintertime through outdoor recreation, outdoor activities, and cozy indoor activities.”

Additional events are expected to be announced in the near future. All Winter Carnival events are subject to change.

2020 marks the 80th year members of the Wisconsin Union team have made Winter Carnival possible. Many Carnival events are hosted by WUD student leaders from the Directorate’s committees and Hoofer clubs at the Wisconsin Union. These leaders organize, promote and execute thousands of events throughout the year, including cultural events and outdoor recreation and education.

Purchases made at Memorial Union during this celebration and all year long help make events, like the Carnival possible, and help fund student leadership opportunities.

Gillware Digital Forensics Announces Rebrand to Tetra Defense and Secures $3 Million in Series A Funding to Accelerate Growth

MADISON, Wis.–Gillware Digital Forensics, Madison-based cyber incident response and proactive cybersecurity consulting firm, announces its rebrand to Tetra Defense and the close of a $3 million series A investment round. The rebrand and investment announcements follow a significant year of growth in 2019 and serve as the precursor for continued growth in 2020.

Mendota Venture Capital LLC led the funding round with participation from several investors. The investment is the first funding round by Tetra Defense since launching in 2016. The $3 million raised will help the company aggressively expand its team, sales and marketing efforts, as well as broaden and enhance product and service development. Nick Jackson, Principal at Mendota Venture Capital LLC, and Mike Victorson, President and CEO of M3 Insurance, will join the Tetra Defense Board of Directors.

“As cyberattacks and other incidents impact more organizations than ever before, Tetra Defense’s funding round and rebrand are well-timed to match the rapidly growing demand for cyber incident response and proactive information security services,” said Nick Jackson, Principal with Mendota Venture Capital LLC. “Tetra Defense is an exceptional provider of these services. We are thrilled to collaborate with and support them as they expand and continue to build an impressive organization in a growing industry.”

Tetra Defense, formerly Gillware Digital Forensics, helps organizations respond to and recover from cyber incidents like ransomware attacks, business email compromise and data breaches. Many victim businesses are brought to a grinding halt and cannot fully operate. Tetra Defense is one of the only incident response firms to assist with and prioritize restoration of operations to limit downtime. Additionally, Tetra Defense helps organizations develop effective information security programs and defenses to lessen the risk of a cyber incident with services including IT risk assessments, penetration testing, email phishing training, incident response plan testing and more.

“Businesses of all sizes are increasingly finding themselves at war with cyber criminals around the globe,” said Scott Holewinski, CEO. “This investment gives us the resources we need to build new and innovative tools and services to help our clients respond and defend against future cyber threats.”

About Tetra Defense

Tetra Defense, formerly Gillware Digital Forensics, is an incident response, cyber risk management, and digital forensics firm helping clients recover and restore from incidents like ransomware, business email compromise and wire transfer fraud. Services range from in-depth forensics investigations of intellectual property theft to the assessment and development of corporate information security programs. With offices in Madison and Milwaukee, the top-priority objectives for the Tetra Defense team are to help organizations get back on their feet after an incident and guide them through the process of building a more secure environment to lessen the risk of incidents in the first place. Tetra frequently works with insurance carriers and some of the nation’s largest and most respected privacy law firms to navigate cyber liability insurance claims and also works directly with businesses large and small to reduce their cyber risk.

Gamifying Music Streaming Through Artist Advocacy

MADISON, WI – January 13, 2019 – The rapidly growing app, LÜM, that combines music streaming with the amplification effects of social media, has launched a virtual gifting system focused on direct-to-artist financial support. The Madison-based tech startup recently closed a $1.4 million seed financing and launched its social media and music streaming app in July 2019. The platform has grown to over 15,000 fans, 22,000 artists and has over 60,000 tracks in its music catalog.

Fans will now be able to use LÜM’s newly created in-app currency to gift their favorite artists. In the music streaming industry, less than 1% of artists earn any material income from fans streaming their music. On LÜM, artists can directly connect with fans and share their music, increasing and monetizing their fanbase all on one platform.

LÜM’s virtual in-app-currency, Notes, can either be bought in-app or earned through streaming music and engaging on the app. LÜM has eight levels of virtual gifts, with each gift representing a specific number of Notes. A Note has a set monetary value that is slightly greater than the royalty payout per stream of other music streaming alternatives. Fans can use LÜM’s virtual gifts to support their favorite artists, earning rewards and achievements along the way.

Current streaming platforms lack the ability for fans to directly support their favorite artists, while crowd-funding platforms lack the necessary incentives to drive fan support. LÜM creates a direct connection between the artists and fans, where artists provide unique content experiences and music to their loyal supporters. Fans can connect with the artists they gift and then compete to be an artist’s top supporter. By gamifying music discovery and enhancing the fan and artist experience, LÜM looks to revolutionize the way music streaming is monetized for artists.

LÜM has also recently partnered with Frank Productions, one of the largest concert promoters in the United States. The partnership looks to explore the relationship between LÜM’s fan and artist data, and its possible uses for live entertainment and other verticals in the music industry.
